International PhD Scholarship in Build ability Problems Diagnosis System at University of Central Lancashire, UK

College University of Central Lancashire Funded International PhD Scholarship in School of Built & Natural Environment, UK

Study Subject: Build ability Problems Diagnosis System
Employer: The University of Central Lancashire
College Scholarships Level: PhD

Scholarships Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Built & Natural Environment. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.

This project is based on the growing interest for reductions rework in construction projects in order to increase efficiency, minimise delays and impact on the environment. The direct costs of rework in construction often accounts to between 5% -15% of the total costs and as 30% of the activities in construction projects and it is recognised that site teams spend disproportionate time and effort making designs work in practice. The occurrence of rework in construction is usually the result of correcting inadequately implemented activities or processes. Build ability is widely considered as one of the main causes of reworks in construction industry. Accurately assessing the build ability of a design can be a significant challenge. The current manual process is time-consuming, prone to error and does not precisely identify the cost implications of build ability issues. This can lead to substantial inefficiencies and errors, going undetected or unnoticed, causing issues in the delivery process and spiralling costs.

The aim of the proposed project is to develop an automated system for diagnosing build ability problems at design stage to solve them before it reaches the site team to avoid rework and delays. To achieve this aim a number of objectives have to be met. These objectives:
- Investigate key build ability problems and their nature (interface problems, assembly problems, compatibility problems etc)
-Developing framework for build ability problems diagnosis.
- Developing bespoke automated build ability diagnosis system.
- Evaluate, using appropriate examples, the effectiveness of the proposed framework and build ability diagnosis system.

The project has four main activities – critical analysis and better understand of build ability problems at the design and construction stages and their impact on rework, the development of a framework for identifying these problems, the development of a bespoke automated system for identifying buildability problems during the design stage, and development of a prototype and system evaluation.

Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.
