Study Subject(s): Animal Health
College Scholarships Level: Postdoctoral
Scholarship Provider: University of Edinburgh, UK
Scholarship Positions can be taken at: UK
Eligibility:
A PhD with experience in modern molecular biology techniques, including at least some of the following techniques: gene cloning, gene expression analysis, cell biology, cell culture and protein purification and analysis. Highly motivated and ready to drive a project, in consultation with grant PIs and industrial partner. Good person skills and willingness to collaborate. The ability to collaborate effectively with a number of different people, and to coordinate a complex project is key. Effective communication of research to colleagues and the public is also important.
Scholarship Description: The postdoctoral fellow will join a project funded by the BBSRC as a LINK grant with Pfizer Animal Health, as a collaboration with Prof. David Hume, Prof. Helen Sang and Dr. Andy Gill at The Roslin Institute. The main goal of the project is to produce transgenic hens expressing key growth factors as a component of egg white, as a novel production method for biologically active proteins for veterinary purposes. The project will involve production of transgenic chicken lines, development of novel protein purification methods and evaluation of the proteins produced. A strong track record in molecular biology and some experience of protein purification technologies are required.
This project will give the postdoctoral scientist the opportunity to develop new skills and to work in collaboration with a major animal health company.
