College Scholarships Research Assistant, University of London, UK

Research College Scholarships at School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science

Study Subject: Applied statistics, machine learning or decision science
Employer: Queen Mary, University of London
College Scholarships Level: Researcher

College Scholarships Description: A Research Assistant is required to join a collaboration between the Risk Assessment and Decision Analysis Research (RADAR) Group in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and surgeons from the academic unit in Trauma Medicine at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. The Royal London Hospital is the home to London’s air ambulance and provides specialist major trauma care for millions across London and SE England.

One of the most difficult decisions for a clinician to make is whether to amputate an injured limb or attempt to salvage it. Severely injured limbs may require amputation, either at the time of initial surgery, or many months later. Advances in orthopaedics, plastic surgery and vascular surgery have meant that previously unsalvageable limbs can now be saved. However, radical improvements in prosthetic technology and rehabilitative medicine mean that modern prostheses can also restore a patient’s quality of life. There are ‘scoring systems’ that surgeons can use to help decide whether or not to amputate. Unfortunately, none of these are useful in the more difficult cases.

The project builds on the RADAR Group’s internationally recognised expertise with Bayesian Networks for decision support, together with the clinical data and expertise of the Royal London. A new approach to decision modeling developed for this problem is expected to have many applications in the development of medical guidelines.

The Research Assistant is expected to have, or be about to complete, a PhD in the field of applied statistics, machine learning or decision science. An interest in the use of Bayesian networks (and some knowledge about them) is essential. Although desirable, previous experience working with medical staff is not essential, but the candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills beyond his/her own technical discipline.

The post is full time for one year starting as soon as possible. Further funding is likely to be approved for a further year provided that adequate progress is demonstrated. Starting salary will be in the range £27,913 – £33,659 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, final salary pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
