College Scholarships Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: University of Toronto.
Scholarship can be taken at: Canada

Eligibility:
1) sincere interest in forest ecology, forestry, or remote sensing, 2) strong quantitative skills, 3) remote sensing and GIS skills, or the ability to learn them quickly, and 4) excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

College Scholarships Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: A fully-funded Ph.D. position is available in Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto. The Ph.D. candidate will assess the potential for using unmerchantable wood as feedstock for the production of bioenergy. In particular, the candidate will: 1) determine how much logging residue can be recovered from partially harvested stands; 2) develop new inventory methods for estimating how much of this unmerchantable wood is available in central Ontario. To achieve both of these objectives, the candidate will use ground-based harvest trials to inform the development of aerial inventory methods, including light detection and ranging (LiDAR). The candidate may also participate in a larger effort to examine how the production of wood, fibre and fuel can be balanced with the continued provision of other ecosystem services, including the maintenance of biodiversity and storage of carbon.

How to Apply: Applicants should send a letter of enquiry and curriculum vitae to John Caspersen (john.caspersen-at-utoronto.ca).

Postdoctoral Scholarships College in Theoretical/Computational Biophysics at Centre for Genomic Regulation

College Scholarships Centre for Genomic Regulation offers Postdoctoral Position in the field of theoretical/computational biophysics in Spain Scholarship 2011

Study Subject(s): Theoretical/Computational Biophysics
College Student Scholarships Level: Postdoctoral
Scholarships Provider: Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)
Scholarship can be taken at: Spain

Eligibility:-The successful applicant will have significant experience in computational approaches including simulations, and ability to carry out conversations in English, as well as an interest in working collaboratively with experimentalists.

International College Scholarships for International Students: No

Scholarship 2011 Description: We seek a motivated, independent individual to use a modeling/simulation approach to develop computational models of mitotic spindle elongation. The modeling effort will be closely integrated with ongoing experiments, in both simple eukaryotic cells (budding yeast), and later on for more complex animal cells. The goal is for modeling to help interpret experiments, and in turn, for experiments to constrain and guide the modeling. Our initial goal is to develop models of spindle elongation that incorporate the elastic properties of mitotic chromosomes, to better understand the relationship between spindle elongation and chromosome segregation. The work will be carried out primarily at the CRG in Barcelona, in the laboratory of Dr. Manuel Mendoza, but will also involve collaboration with Dr. Steven Gross (UC Irvine).
